The Visual Arts department encourages students to experience a variety of media while learning the elements and principles of art. Elementary students start in the area of Studio Art to learn traditional 2D and 3D techniques such as drawing, painting, and sculpting. They have art once each week with the opportunity to create compositions that may be displayed in the DSA galleries, or sent to various county and state art shows.
Fourth and fifth graders rotate through art with their classes; however, they also have the opportunity to choose Visual Art as a "Mini-Major". Mini-Majors have two extra blocks of art each week In order to excel in art. They will experience studio art for 1 semester (2 nine weeks) and digital art for 1 semester.
Middle School students are able to choose one of the Visual Art specialties as a Major for the entire middle school years, or experiment with a variety of art electives that may be offered from year to year. See the links on the left for the middle school majors or click on the diagram below.
