"Cinderelly, Cinderelly!"

 

In May, D.S.A.’s Drama Department will be presenting their annual spring musical which is going to be Rodger's and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”! It's the classic story of a hard working girl who falls in love with her Prince Charming and learns that wishing for dreams to come true is not as important as actually pursuing them. The title role of the young lady who steps into the slippers of royalty will be shared by Victoria Adolphson and Gabriella Difabio. The show will be directed by the fabulous Mrs. Sandy Cain! It is her 9th year at D.S.A., and in that time she has directed such shows as “The Secret Garden”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Annie”, and “Fiddler on the Roof Jr.” Also lending their skills to this show are Music Director Harold Wright, Choreographer Myriah Jost and Technical Director Erik Morris. The other 91 performers of the cast are students from Kindergarten all the way through eighth grade!

Opening night will be Friday, May, 3rd and is followed by our special opening night gala. Other showings include Saturday, May 4th, Friday, May 10th, and Saturday, May 11th. Performance times are 7pm on Fridays and at 2pm and 7pm on Saturdays. Opening night tickets will be $7 online (with a 50 cent surcharge per ticket) or $8 at the box office (which only opens one hour before each performance). For all other performances, tickets are priced at $5 online and $6 at the box office. (Please remember you CAN NOT buy tickets online the same day of any given performance. No exceptions.)

Online ticket sales will begin on Monday, April 15th. and all performances are at the Frank R. Howes Fine Arts Theatre. Our school is once again very excited to showcase the amazing talents of our students in our production of “Cinderella” and we hope to see you there!

 

 

Junior Thespian Society

 

The International Junior Thespian Society is a professional association for theater education. The International Thespian Society is the world's largest honor society for theater arts students. Together, the Educational Theater Association and the International Thespian Society had been helping build strong school theater programs for more than 75 years.

 

 

What is the International Thespian Society?

 

The International Thespian Society, a division of the Educational Theater Association, is the honorary theater organization for students in middle and high school. The I.T.S. offers everything from varied performance venues, to college audition opportunities, and formal awards and scholarships.

 

How do students qualify for a membership?

 

Students qualify by earning points from their work in Theater Arts. For grades 6-8 one point is equal to 5 hours of work. To be eligible for a membership the student needs to have at least 10 points. These points must be earned in at least 2 productions in 2 different production areas of acting and stage management.

 

Is there a cost for a student membership?

 

Yes. There is a fee of $13.00. The fee is not due until the acceptance and agreements are signed by both the student and the parent.

 

All Junior Thespians receive:

• -A membership certificate.
• -A personalized membership card.
• -The option to apply 5 of their points toward high school Thespian membership.

-Eligibility to serve as a chapter student officer.

-Eligibility to apply for Doug Finney Festival (all expense paid trip).

-Eligibility to submit original plays to the Thespian Playworks program

-Eligibility to participate in individual events at chapter conferences and the National Individual Events Showcase at Festival

 

The Storytelling Team!

Storytelling helps a student use creativity and imagination and shows them how to perform confidently in front of a live audience. Storytelling is a club where students learn how to memorize and perform a popular story, folktale or fairy tale. The club practices in the Black Box weekly from the beginning of the school year until the first event, then once in a while throughout the year. They perform at places like the Cracker Storytelling Festival, the Horse Creek Festival, the DSA Arts Fair, Tellabration and the Hillsborough County Storytelling Festival. They have about ten students each year from kindergarten to 8th grade. The students are asked to practice their story at home and they perform the same story for each event.

Wendy Sullivan won a scholarship and received an award for attending a special storytelling festival in Mt. Dora.	The storytellers of 2011-2012 receive their awards at the Cracker Storytelling Festival.

 

Meet our Drama Teachers!

 

SANDY CAIN is originally from Washington D.C., where she graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Radio/Television/Film & Theatre Arts. She also holds a Masters of Education Degree in Arts/Academic Interdisciplinary Education from Southeastern University. Mrs. Cain has been actively involved in the Entertainment Industry since the age of four. As an Actress/Director, she has over thirty years experience in Theatre, Television, and Radio. Since being at DSA, Mrs. Cain has very much enjoyed having the opportunity to direct The Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Oliver!, The Secret Garden, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Annie and Fiddler on the Roof Jr. with her next show being Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. She enjoys serving as DSA’s International Junior Thespian Society Director. When not teaching drama at DSA, Mrs. Cain is busy sharpening her acting skills, serving on the Lake Wales Little Theatre Board of Directors, and facilitating theatrical workshops in the Orlando area. ROBERT MOSZENBERG is enjoying his ninth year as a Drama instructor at Davenport School of the Arts. He studied theatre and film at the University of Miami and has performed for Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SAK comedy labs, and several local theatre companies. For DSA, he has directed The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Fools, Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, and Charlotte's Web. He has also had the great joy of performing on the DSA stages as Mark Twain, Fagin and Bert Healy. He leads the DSA storytelling team, plays Scrabble and enjoys celebrating the championships of the New York Yankees, New York Giants and Miami Hurricanes. ERIK MORRIS – (Technical Director/Lighting Designer) joins Davenport School of the Arts this season and is excited to share Charlotte’s Web with this new (to him) audience.  Erik operates EMT Productions through which, (prior to teaching and working at DSA) he’s designed, crewed, directed and acted for a number of theatre and production companies including Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Orlando Repertory Theatre, Mad Cow Theatre, SAK Comedy Lab, Playhouse on the Square and Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, among others.  From 2007-2011 he served as the Vice President and Technical Director for Playwrights’ Round Table, a non-profit in Orlando that only produces original scripts and productions.
