The Book Fair was a Success!

This has been the most successful Book Fair we have had in 13 years! In total, we earned $7,346.79! From that we will use $3,673.40 to buy new books for the Media Center. The rest of the profits go to Scholastic. The theme for this Book Fair was "Story Labratory". It ran from Feb. 25th to March 4th, and during this time almost 1,000 students came to look at all the new books. The Primary Choir did a wonderful job performing on Family Night (Feb. 25th), and each student that performed, was rewarded with a free book (even Ms. Smokay got one!) At each Book fair there is a Candy Contest. A jar is filled to the top with a certain kind of candy, and each student who wants to participate must write down their guess to how many pieces of candy are in the jar. This year the jar was filled with gummy "Krabby Patties." There were 48 pieces of candy in the jar, and the winner was Winter Gallispie with a guess of exactly 48! As a reward she recieved the entire jar of candy. Also, every year every staff member enters a drawing for $25 dollars worth of books from the Book Fair, and the winner this year was Mr.Mercier.

 

 

 

 

Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the leftover books? Well, Mrs. Canady herself has multiple uses for them. One use of them is for the reading party. All of the students who meet their A.R goal, get to go to the Reading Party. When they arrive they choose from a multitude of books, and a book mark. All of those books are from the Book Fair! So if you didn't get a book from the last Book Fair, work hard to achieve your A.R goal! Another use is for Teacher Appreciation week where Mrs. Canady lets every staff member choose a book, and not just teachers, because she believes that every person deserves a book for all of their hard work! Also, as gifts for the P.T.A, she puts leftover books on tables and lets every member choose a book. They can either keep them or give them to their children .

Meet Our Librarians!

 

Mrs. Canady has been working as a librarian at DSA since 2000. She was a classroom teacher in Polk County School for ten years before earning a master’s degree in media and technology from the University of South Florida. She is from Lakeland, Fl. and is as old as dirt ( this is what she says, because her true age will forever remain a secret.) You might be wondering why she became a librarian. "Not only do I love books and reading, but I like to organize things". If you put organizing and books together, then that is what makes a good librarian." says Mrs. Canady. She loves books, loves her job, but especially loves when kids come up to her and talk about how much they loved a book they read. Mrs. Canady's mission is to get as many books as possible in the homes of children so that they can develop a love for reading. "Reading is knowledge, after all." she says.

 

Mrs. Carter has been working for our school for 20 years and 11 of those wonderful years were at the library. What she enjoys most about D.S.A. is the friendly atmosphere. "We are like a family, the rest of the staff and I, a good working team, we all get along." says Mrs. Carter. She works in the library because she enjoys seeing all the kids, and helping them find whatever book they need. Her favorite part about working in the library is interacting with the children, and watching them get excited over a new book. Mrs. Carter met Mrs. Canady when Mrs. Canady first came to D.S.A. and they are now very good friends. Sometimes both of them go and have dinner together when school is over. When Mrs.Carter is not at school, she enjoys taking care of her 3 grandchildren, sewing, and making gift baskets for her friends and family.
